Description

This exquisite and very collectable Victorian silver case with magnifying glass to lid is dated London 1894 and bears the marks of the renowned Sampson Mordan. It has a rounded oblong form with pinned swivel mechanism opening to reveal a miniature English Dictionary with red leather cover and gilt lettering. The text requiring the magnifying glass to be read.
The founder of S. Mordan & Co, a notable English silver and goldsmiths was known for its production of high quality small silver items, such as vesta cases, desk seals and propelling pencils. During the late 19th century, the firm supplied many articles, often in novelty shapes, to a number of notable retailers, such as Asprey & Sons. Today Sampson Mordan novelty items are very sought-after.
