Description

This exquisite Georgian silver nutmeg grater bears the marks of the prolific silversmith Joseph Willmore who was part of the Birmingham toy making * fraternity. It is dated Birmingham 1801 and is in excellent order, it is fully hallmarked, which was not often the case. The bright-cut rectangular body is the perfect size to house a nutmeg, as can be seen on one of my images. The pull-off cover opens to reveal the original steel grater. The base with pull-off cover. * from the late 18th to early 19th Century, Birmingham was the centre for the making of �toys�: small decorative objects from silver. They were produced in small family businesses and factories throughout Birmingham. They made a range of items including patch boxes, nutmeg graters, buckles, caddy spoons, vinaigrettes, snuff boxes and babies rattles.
