Description

This delightful Georgian silver vinaigrette was made in 1813 by the silversmith John Lawrence & Co, a renowned Birmingham toy maker *. It is of rectangular form. The front cover is bright-engraved with prick-dot decorations. The rectangular reserve vacant. The back and sides with conforming decorations. The hinged lid opening to reveal a gilt grille pierced with floral decorations.
* from the late 18th to early 19th Century, Birmingham was the centre for the making of “toys”: small decorative objects from silver. They were produced in small family businesses and factories throughout Birmingham. They made a range of items including patch boxes, nutmeg graters, buckles, caddy spoons, vinaigrettes, snuff boxes and babies rattles.

Date letter "p" for 1813.
Birmingham Assay mark.
Lion Passant.
Duty mark.

Good hinge on both vinaigrette and grille.
