Description
These charming Georgian silver bright-cut sugar tongs were made by the very collectable Hester Bateman*, who was active between 1761 and 1790. The shaped arms with bright-engraved motifs, the cups modelled as acorns. The top engraved with the letter "M".Hester Bateman' work is sough- after mainly because she encapsulates the life 18th Century female silversmiths, most of them widows, who carried on working in a very male dominated environment. She was born in 1709 in Clerkenwell. In 1730 she married John Bateman, jeweller and chain maker. They had six children. In 1760, Hester's husband died of consumption. Hester carried on the family firm and entered her own mark in 1761. She appears to have been illiterate , as her only signature in the records is the crude initials HB. In 1790 Hester handed over the firm to her sons Peter and Jonathan. She died in 1794, aged 85 years.
