Description

This exquisite and very rare Victorian Aesthetic movement silver vinaigrette is dated Birmingham 1880. Of shaped rectangular form, the base with a sparrow chasing an insect on a typical fan and foliate background, the front cover engraved with a squirrel and sparrow amongst foliage, The gilt grille pierced with foliate scrolls. The top with ring attachment. It bears the marks of Deakin & Nephew*, whose marks were only in existence for two years.
* Charles Washington Deakin & Stephen Deakin traded as Deakin & Nephew between 1879 and 1881.
Stephen Deakin was Charles Deakin's nephew. Charles Deakin retired in 1881 and the company became Deakin & Francis.
Hallmarks:
D&N for Deakin & Nephew.
Date letter "f" for 1880.
Birmingham Assay mark.
Lion Passant.
Duty mark.
Condition:
Very good.
Good hinge on both vinaigrette and grille.
Good clear hallmarks marks.
